The Santa Cruz Feria is this week. It commences with the crowning of the queen Wednesday evening then Thursday the parade. This will be the first year that I get to be there. My friend, Jeanne says that the best part is the Parade. Her comments from last year's event:
"I love a Parade! Many of the classes dressed as a profession. There were bomberos (firefighters), panaderos (bakers), medicos (doctors), albanils (masons) carpinteros (carpenters), basureros (sanitation men), the usual crowd of drummers and twirlers, their teachers and One Crazy Clown."
See more photos from last year in the short slide show below. All photos are courtesy of Jeanne Mendez. If you can't view them in your email or RSS feed, go to the blog page: http://santacruzlalaguna.weebly.com/blog.html
The Parade starts at the muelle and the children and others dress in costumes and parade up to the village and around. Come join the fun. You might even spy our resident Crazy Clown! The CECAP Café Sabor Cruzeño will be open from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Come by for a refreshing drink, snack or even lunch!

GIVEBIG, Online, May 15, midnight to midnight PDT
For the third year in a row Amigos de Santa Cruz Foundation is participating in the Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG Fundraising event. It is one day only, May 15 from midnight to midnight Pacific Daylight Time. By donating to Amigos through the Seattle Foundation's website on that particular day, Amigos will receive part of the "stretch fund pool". What does this mean? SIF provides a pool of funds that will be divided up proportionately between the participating charities based on the amount of funds that the charities raise on that date. Please consider making a donation to Amigos de Santa Cruz on May 15. Your donation will go further! Also, please tell your friends! If you are a U.S. citizen, your donation is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Thanks!

What to do if a swam of bees invades your premises! First, it is likely that the bees in Guatemala are Africanized Honey Bees which have a reputation for being aggressive. My bee expert friend in the U.S. says that in general they are no more aggressive except when provoked or defending their nest (aren't we all!). If they are swarming where you don't want them (like under your porch eaves) they could just be resting while "scouts" are out looking for a suitable nesting location. But if they start to create wax it indicates they are settling in for the long haul.
In any case, you probably want to remove them and this is a job best left to an expert bee keeper. Do not try to do this yourself. The bee keeper will remove them to a hive box so they can gather and collect the honey. Shad Qudsi and his friend Eric of Tzununa are two such people who are willing to come to collect bees: 4795 3049. If you know of others, please let me know and I will post them. They will be permanently listed on our Services page: http://santacruzlalaguna.weebly.com/services.html
