This week we have 2 Photos of the Week that record the Santa Cruz Feria this past weekend. The first was taken by Juan Perez Simaj of the two beautiful reinas of the Feria. On the left is "Elena" from Tzununa who is the madrina (godmother) of Sports. On the right is Maria Garcia Sipac of La Laguna Seca who is the Reina of the Pueblo of 2014. I love the little princess on the right and to the back of the photo. A future queen for sure!
The second photo is by Jeanne Mendez who took this wonderful aerial view of the plaza with the crowds, bands and festivities. Makes you want to be there!
I am compiling an album of 2014 Feria photos and videos on the Santa Cruz website Media Gallery. If you have any to contribute, please let me know. You will be given credit for your photos!

"We are a brand new business in Panajachel growing organic vegetables and flowers. Right now we are growing salad and juicing vegetables, with recipes available. All our plants are grown organically. We do not use chemical fertilizers of any kind. We grow with all natural materials including leaf mold enriched loam soil, earthworms and composted nutrients for your best health.
We hope to work with other local growers around Lake Atitlan to provide an organic market in Panajachel for organic vegetable produce, chickens and eggs. Right now we have a small, select supply of organic vegetables for sale at Sandra's Market and our own garden in Panajachel. We hope to start a regular weekend Organic Farmers Market soon - volunteers & ideas welcome!"

And here is another new business in Pana. Jennifer Bigman has had her bed and breakfast for awhile, but now she is adding a new venture located next door to her B&B, Jenna's Galeria.
Jenna says:
"Hello Friends, acquaintances and future friends...
Do you have stuff to sell? I am in the last stages of getting the Gallery/ Consignment shop ready for opening. The new place is located on Rancho Grande, half a block from the lake opposite the Hotel Porta del Lago.
I'm pretty much going to use the same formula that Makki used when we had the shop Makki's opposite the Bank BAM.
So, if you have items of furniture, lamps, paintings, jewelry etc. that you would like to sell, then please come by. I can certainly help you with pricing and the deal will be the same. You tell me what you want for an item and the shop will add on a percentage. I would like to use the next three weeks to accept items for sale and start folders again for everyone interested.
The goal is to open on the 1st of June and have our 'Gala Opening' on the 15th of June.
Also, the inside of the consignment shop will have several kiosks that people can rent if you want to sell your own stuff. These are getting spoken for but I do have a few left. Outside, I still have a few small shops that will be available for rent from the 1st of June.
Another thing to note: I am planning to start a Saturday morning Market. We have plenty of room and I think it would be wonderful if the people who are growing organic produce would use the outside space. This would be a weekly event.
If you have any questions, please call me at 5458 1984, or write: [email protected]
Wish me luck, I think we've all missed Makki's shop and it's really about time we try and replace it. Any suggestions please....very welcome."

On Facebook there have been several separate reports this week of the sighting of a biggish cat around Jaibalito and Santa Cruz. One report said it was black with yellow eyes another identified it as a "puma". I asked our resident big cat expert, Mer Barnes, what she thought. Without having seeing a photo of the actual animal, she thinks that it it could be a jaguarundi (puma yagouroundi).

The photo here is of a dark grey jaguarundi from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (public domain).

JB and I got a new rain gauge and we are starting to record the rainfall at our h ouse. I am going to begin a new seasonal segment to the blog with the weekly rainfall am ounts as it is recorded at our house in Paxanax. This will always be at the bottom of the Blog so you can skip it if you want!
This week, however, we didn't record it for the full week. This week's time frame is only for Thursday May 8 to 8 a.m. on Sunday May 11. According to CONRED, the official rainy season begins on May 15.
