The 2nd Lake Atitlan Marathon is on for the weekend of November 30 - December 1. We ask you to support and run the Lake Atitlan Marathon races not only for the pure enjoyment and spectacle of a November day, but also in order to generate funds that are used to meet the environmental problems currently faced by the lake. The organizers are a volunteer, non-profit community based group that uses all funds raised to fund specific environmental projects within the Lake Atitlan Basin. Pick your event, the shorter 10 kilometer or the half marathon races held on Saturday, November 30, or the amazing Lake Atitlan Challenge Marathon held on Sunday, December 1, a race judged by ESPNrun.com to be one of the ten best challenge marathons in the world.

A delegation of Guatemalans went to the 2013 Lake Tahoe Summit to learn from their experiences in preserving Lake Tahoe from cyanobacteria. The delegation included the president of the Guatemala’s Mayors Association of Guatemala, Antonio Coro; students and researchers from the university; researcher Joram Gill from the University of San Carlos’s School of Engineering and Sanitation; and Ivan Azurdia the Director of AMSCLAE.
The group from Guatemala met with scientists, policy makers, ranchers, wastewater engineers and community members to gather information that will help them save their Lake Atitlan from an accelerated eutrophication process due to the algae and sewage particle loading from the watershed. And here is an article from the Prensa Libra about a meeting last July about a program developed by the Cooperación Española.

So money is coming in to study and develop solutions. We only hope that the money is well spent.
