On 12 December the Lake was graced with an amazing site of a double rainbow! Below are two photos that were taken of that event by two of our residents, Patricia Torpie and Denver Hopkins.
Also, I am going to be starting a Photo of the Week segment on the Blog starting with these 2 photos. Many of you whom I am friends with on FaceBook post great photos of the Lake and the community (people, etc.). Either make sure that I see them by posting on my FB page or emailing them to me even if you are not on FB. Also, please send any particulars like where you photographed it and the date, if possible. I will select the photo for the week and, with permission and credit, post on the Blog. I have also created a Photo-of-the-Week slide show on the Santa Cruz website's Media photo page to archive these special images: http://santacruzlalaguna.weebly.com/photos.html
These rainbow photos are the auspicious beginning of this unique collection!

The Dynamic Duo
As everyone knows, Dave and Deedle are the bedrock of our community. The Iguana acts as a meeting place and, of course, we all love our Saturday Market which they host complimentary. I wanted to write this message because I felt so grateful to them after our little fire at Villa Sumaya this past Friday. Dave and Deedle have fished bodies out of the lake, tried to breath life into the unconscious, ran to the city (numerous times) with accident victims, act as fire fighters, are on the board of non-profits, open their home to Christmas Eve caroling, have many weekends where their home is inundated with children and there is so much more. I do not want to get sappy but I am appreciative and touched by their kindness, sense of community and their tireless willingness to do what it takes. Thank you Dave and Deedle...
Love, Lizzy and your community in Santa Cruz.

From Roberto Luz:
On March 22, 2014 we will be celebrating the 11th Festival Atitlán here in Santiago Atitlán. Festival Atitlán is a nonprofit alternative Music and Arts Festival that is produced by the community here in Lake Atitlán. This year we have chosen ADISA (The Association of Parents and Friends of People with Disabilities in Santiago Atitlán), a local organization here in Santiago that looks after the welfare and education of special children to receive the proceeds from the event.
As we are a non-commercial event, and all the organizers, artists, and most of the staff donate their time and labor, the environment that is created by such positive energy is outstanding. It’s a very special day for the whole family, and we try to showcase the many faces of world culture by presenting acts in many different styles. Something done by the community for the community.
We offer the artists who participate food, a hotel room, and a small incentive to help with expenses. Moreover, it is a chance to play with an excellent sound system, and the best sound engineers, along with the best musicians in Guatemala and the world. If you have a music, dance, theater, poetry, comedy, etc. group and are interested in being part of this year’s event, Contact me today, because time is limited and registrations will be closing on January 5th : [email protected]
All of this is to support a very special project for very special people, at one of the most special events in Guatemala.
If you are a photographer or videographer and want to help us document the 2014 Festival Atitlan, or if you're a graphic artist and want to be part of our gallery or help with the poster, write me at the same address.
There are many opportunities for people who want to volunteer. If you don’t have time to help in another way, please send this information to 5 of your friends.
You can find more information about ADISA and their projects at http://www.adisagt.com/
There is lots of information about Festival Atitlán, pictures, and recordings of artists who have appeared at the event, and Radio Festival Atitlán on our website, I'll be adding information about the 2014 event as it unfolds: http://www.festivalatitlan.com/

Hi everyone, this is Jean - the other Jean, who also dances. Many of you know me, of course, since I have spent a lot of time on the lake and at Santa Cruz. I am in Nicaragua now and I would like to come back, and I thought that I could offer my house sitting services like Marjolein did. I house sat last year on the lake and over the years in the States I have housesat here and there. I am a responsible older American woman, clean and conscientious. I love all animals and adore dogs. I speak fair to middling Spanish, certainly enough to communicate well with workers. I don't drink anything except herb teas and fruit juices, and I don't smoke anything at all! :-) I could be available from the beginning of February to mid-April 2014; my services are offered for free and I could consider other economical situations, exchanges, etc. Thank you for thinking of me!
