This week's photo was taken by Lee Beal of Santa Cruz la Laguna. Lee shot this waterspout looking from Panajachel West toward San Jorge and Santa Cruz on or about 30 of May, 2014.

Ayuda Perros y Gatos reports that there is a tick invasion going on around the Lake, particularly in the areas of San Marcos and San Pedro.
Ayuda says, "We have tested dogs around the Lake and have found Erlichiosis and Anaplasmosis. These are be very serious if not treated with the proper antibiotics. The highest number of cases have been identified around the San Marcos/San Pablo area, so far."
Even though this alert is through Ayuda and about dogs, it is also a danger to humans and cats. Please be read the article and be alert.

What was Centro de Bienestar de Salud is changed names and is now officially the Lake Atitlan Wellness Clinic. March 6th, Dr. Louis De Pena and Linda DeBlanco opened the Clinic at 3-34 Calle Monterrey in Panajachel.
Linda DeBlanco says,
"Read the full story is on our website Lake AtitlanWellness Clinic. We are not affiliated with Mayan Medical Aid but have begun all the necessary legal paperwork in California to become our own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our independent status will allow us to function more expeditiously and efficiently and follow through with some of our own pet projects.
The clinic has been in operation only since March 6th - just over two months - and already Dr. Luis De Pena has treated over 500 patients almost entirely on a no-charge basis. Only patients who were able to pay provided small donations of usually 5Q. A great number of those patients presented with life-threatening conditions for which we fortunately had medications on hand to address their needs.
Located on Calle Monterrey behind Hotel Cakchiquel, the clinic is generally only open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. The current average of patients seen each day is up to about 15. Word of mouth among our potential patients is creating a gradual increase in the popularity of the clinic. We have not done anything to encourage patients to come to the clinic because if TOO MANY patients came we might run out of medicine and that would certainly not be a good thing. So we are simply allowing for the natural course of things to take place.
Of course, fundraising will never end so we must keep on top of that all the time. The fundraiser we held on April 6 at Porta Hotel Del Lago was very successful and everyone who attended reported it was lots of fun too.
That event was needed in order to get the clinic launched so a great percentage of the funds to get opened were provided by ticket sales for the event in addition to raffles, auction and bar income.
We realize, however, that we cannot depend only on local Panajachel friends and supporters to keep the clinic afloat on an ongoing basis. That would not really be fair since there are so many worthy causes in our community that the local people of Panajachel are continually contributing to very generously. Therefore, we are now working on global fundraising campaigns over the internet. Some of our more substantial donations have come from friends, contacts and supporters in the USA.
Any and all support, whether financial or at the clinic itself will be welcomed with open arms. We encourage visitors to just drop by and see what we are up to."

"At Sensei Doug Duncan's workshop at Villa Sumaya, we all had a small snack (one ant per person, two nights running) and they were fried in oil after being salted and a little lemon juice added. On the first night we ate the whole ant (little crunchy and the legs tended to need dental floss to get them out of your teeth). But the second night we ate the thorax only and everyone agreed they were quite good."

Rainfall in Paxanax for the week of May 26 - June 1: 5.5 inches or 14 cm.
Here in Paxanax we have only been recording the rainfall since May 9, but so far this month we have recorded 15.65 inches or 39.75 cm. "New York Bill" has been recording rainfall for at least 10 years and says that this is the highest he has recorded for the month of May.
A storm is brewing off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala and they are predicting a week of potentially heavy rain for Western Guatemala that could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides in areas of mountainous terrain. Don't forget your rain gear! Stay safe everyone!
