Tourism Assistance
The Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT) is now offering mandatory medical and legal assistance for tourists visiting the country for a maximum of 15 days. The insurance will be financed through an additional tax on the Tourist Card.
This tax is authorized under the Organic Law of Inguat, but for several years has not been used. The value is set at $5 per person over 12 years. This tax is in addition to the departure tax of U.S. $20. Residents of other Central American countries and those on cruise ships will not be subject to the tax.
Jorge Samayoa, director of Inguat, said the goal is "to seek to improve the perception of security" with tourists. The proposal has been studied and was considered important for travelers to feel safe during their stay in the country.
Medical Assistance
The Inguat private medical coverage for tourists is available in at least 150 municipalities and includes medical advice by telephone in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian 24 hours a day, all year.
In addition, visitors will be covered for $ 1,000, if you have an accident and entitled to laboratory tests, ambulance transfers and ground or air in case of death, the remains will be repatriated to the country of origin.
Medical consultations include common diseases, pediatrics, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, cardiology, and psychologists to provide support in cases of assault, rape and sexual harassment.
Legal Assistance
Legal assistance will be provided to support the tourist at the time of the complaint, claims for accidents, or victims of crime as well as procedures in case of death. This service will be in English and Spanish.
Inguat has contracted for these services for a period of four years, as a way of supporting the Tourist Assistance Program (Proatur) which addresses the difficulties tourists face in remote areas, Samayoa said.
