The Prensa Libre has reported that the minimum wage has been increased for 2014 by 5% from Q71.40 to Q74.97 per day. The increase is effective on January 1, 2014. This raise does not affect the Q250 bonificación.

The 2013 increase in consumer prices for Guatemala will be reported next month but so far the increase is reported at 4.63%. In order for your workers to retain the spending dollars that they make, their salary should be increased by at least this amount to keep in step with inflation. http://www.ine.gob.gt/np/

The Kindle version is updated with a summary of developments on the use of the book as a teaching resource and with photos of Lake Atitlán.

Did you know that the open burning of plastics and rubber is dangerous to your health as well as the health of your workers and neighbors? Even barrels or other types of enclosed structures do not reach temperatures high enough to destroy many of the dangerous chemicals that are created when plastic burns. The released smoke contains toxic fallout of PVC which contains carbon monoxide, dioxins (very bad stuff!) and furans. These toxins are released into the air when burned then breathed by people and animals. Studies have linked dioxins and furans to cancer and respiratory disease. In addition, the remaining ash is potentially dangerous and not appropriate to spread on the soil.
For several years now the residents of my neighborhood of Paxanax have agreed to ban the burning of plastics. Perhaps we can even persuade our munis to ban plastics in their burning landfills for the health of all. Plastics of all types can be recycled at the Centro de Acopio on Calle de la Navidad. Thank you.
Cynthia
