Dia del Ejercito or Army Day is legally on June 30 of each year. But the Guatemalan government, in an effort to promote internal tourism, is trying to create more extended holiday weekends so that Guatemalans can travel more. Therefore, this holiday is actually celebrated on Monday, June 29th this year.
Armand Boissy has written a good blog article on what this means to nemployers:

Apparently you can either pick them up directly at IMAP or they are starting to bring baskets into Santiago. For more information, prices, and to place an order call Neal, 3330-5340.

Below are two photos of the same location in Santa Cruz la Laguna. The top photo was taken by Pat Torpie circa 2009 of, what was then, a private home (toward the back of the property) and the Jacaranda restaurant on the water front. That property has since been sold to Larry and Linda Stitler. In the 6 years since 2003, the Lake has risen quite a bit and the restaurant buildings are partially submerged as illustrated by the second photo taken by the Stitlers. The Stitlers creatively converted the roof top of the restaurant building to a wonderful deck with palapa.

Rainfall in Paxanax for the week of June 22 - 28: Zero inches and zero cm.
Last year this corresponding week brought 3.95” of rain. This year, zero. The early canicula has resulted in eleven days with no rain. This brings mixed feelings. The weather is beautiful but the corn fields are dry. I would hope that July and August do not repeat last year.
